Benefits of Movement

✓ During pregnancy, physical activity and exercise may prevent excessive gestational weight gain. Excessive weight gain is associated with an increased risk for several prenatal complications. Exercise may reduce the risk of many potential complications, including; gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and cesarean deliveries. (ACOG,2019)

✓ Physical activity can help prevent depressive disorders of women in the postpartum period. (ACOG, 2019)

✓ Maternal exercise and movement during pregnancy increases offspring cognitive development into adulthood. (Robinson, 2012)
✓ Exercise in pregnancy can reduce stress, anxiety, and risks for postpartum depression (Pearlstein, 2009).

✓ Regular prenatal physical activity helps to reduce the necessity of medical interventions during labor, without having negative consequences for either the mother or baby. Additional benefits of prenatal exercise include; shorter delivery, less frequent need for anesthesia, reduced risk of operative births, a lower rate of induction of labor, amniotomy, episiotomy and perineum lacerations, and improved neonatal outcome (Szumilewicz, 2013).
